Blackface Minstrelsy. A popular form of entertainment in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that caricatured urban and rural African Americans. Although its roots extend to eighteenth-century Great Britain, the first blackface minstrel troupe, The Virginia Minstrels, formed in New York City.
