Smile!

Filed under: Media,Popular culture — Benjamin Carp @ 9:21 am

Because of the Worcester connection (and the Worcester dis), I had to link to this: a history of the smiley face, in The Guardian.  For anyone interested in reading further into the relevant issues of visual iconography, by the way, I can recommend Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art.

(Hat tip, AHA blog.)

  1. It’s quite certain that the “depressing ambience” of Worcester noted in the article is merely a largely unsuccessful attempt to replicate the atmosphere of the Worcester in the West Midlands, from which the Heart of the Commonwealth takes its name.

One of the oddest legacies of this odd story is “World Smile Day,” which takes place in the first week of October every year (for details, see http://www.worldsmileday.com/). People all over Worcester put large yellow smiley face signs in their front yards, giving the impression that the world’s most insanely cheerful political campaign is under way.

  2. To pull in the latest changes from SVN, use git svn rebase. Important rule: never modify the SVN branches (remotes/{name}). Instead, create a new topic branch.

  3. If you have commit access, you can commit to Subversion from this topic branch. But be careful! First you should do git svn rebase to bring your patch up to date
