It seems very odd to me that Clarke would want to bring Jefferson into the debate on creationism. Anyone who knows anything about Jefferson knows that he is an enlightenment thinker. When I think enlightenment I think rational/scientific and creationism is anything but rational or scientific. Jefferson would be spinning in his grave if he knew his agrarian beliefs had been pilfered for use by creationists.

Brad:

Your post is even better than mine. [Readers should go to: http://americancreation.blogspot.com/2008/12/thomas-jefferson-creationist_06.html.] I particularly like your ending quote from Jefferson on what he thought of how literally one should take the extant text of the Bible:

"The religion-builders have so distorted and deformed the doctrines of Jesus, so muffled them in mysticisms, fancies and falsehoods, have caricatured them into forms so monstrous and inconceivable, as to shock reasonable thinkers...Happy in the prospect of a restoration of primitive Christianity, I must leave to younger athletes to encounter and lop off the false branches which have been engrafted into it by the mythologists of the middle and modern ages."
